You will be receiving an invitation soon and we would like you to give prayerful thought to attending the gifts discernment retreat. Please mark Saturday, September 11 on your calendars for an afternoon of spiritual reflection. We will have activities for your entire family -- children, teens and adults.

KROGER REWARDS PROGRAM: If you haven’t re-registered at Kroger.com, go there and reconnect your Kroger card to the St. John’s Episcopal Church account. The Outreach Committee received $450 for our last quarterly check – future checks will be much smaller if we don’t get people signed up again! If, as some of you have encountered, the sign-up page says invalid or unknown Card Number, stop by the Kroger Service Desk and pick up a new Card Number & try it again. Please call or stop by the Church Office if you think we can help. Father David
ARE YOU ON FACEBOOK? If so please join the St. John’s, Worthington group
online. You can stay up to date on events at St. John’s, connect with friends
or view photos of parish events. Visit www.Facebook.com and do a search for St.
John's Episcopal in Worthington, OH, to get connected. John Wyman
AED UPDATE As many of you know, we at St. John’s have been fundraising for an AED machine for the safety and health of our parishioners and guests. We have now achieved our financial goal and are in the process of obtaining one. Thanks to all who gave their time or money to assist in reaching this goal. Before we get the AED, I thought that it might be important to answer some basic questions about what an AED is and why it is important for our congregation. If you have questions, comments or concerns, please email me at gervais-weinle.1@osu.edu
DO AEDs MAKE MISTAKES? & WHAT ABOUT LEGAL ISSUES?
The internal computer of an AED is 90% sensitive and 99% specific so the risk of shocking someone who does not need it is about 1%. This is more accurate than emergency personnel are in reading and interpreting rhythms. The AED will make the correct “shock” decision more than 90 times out of 100, and a correct “no shock indicated” decision more than 95 times out of 100. In Ohio, rescuers are protected under House Bill 717, which authorizes performance of automated defibrillation and provides civil and criminal immunity.
JOHNNY APPLESEED TREE AT ST. JOHN’S – We are privileged to have our very own Johnny Appleseed Tree. Look for it in full bloom outside the preschool playground fence, just across the parking lot from the entrance to the barn. (A big red ribbon is tied to the trunk.) When the first pioneers arrived in 1803 there were already an abundance of apple trees growing in the area. Johnny Appleseed was a frequent visitor to Worthington--so frequent that Johnny was always welcome to sleep for free on the hearth of the Griswold Inn. Father Art Hadley knew this story and decided it would be appropriate for St. John's to have its own special Johnny Appleseed Tree. Our tree is a scion, a cutting, from the last known growing tree planted by Johnny Appleseed. The apples grown on its branches are an old heirloom variety, very different from the big red apples found in our grocery stores today. Be sure to check it out! Kathy Hall
COMMUNITY-REWARD PROGRAMS from some local grocery stores provide St. John’s with a significant amount of money. These programs give a percentage of the price you pay for groceries to a non-profit organization of your choice. St. John’s has already received over $500 from the Kroger fund. Currently this money goes to the Outreach Committee and is being targeted to clean up and paint Township Hall, which is used almost exclusively for Outreach activities in the community. Please support these programs by signing up with your grocery Rewards card with St. John’s Episcopal Church account.
KROGER: They make you sign up each year after the 1st of April. If you have been signed up with Kroger before that date you must “reconnect” your Reward card to the St. John’s account by going online, logging into your Reward card, selecting St. John’s Episcopal Church for the association, and then keep buying groceries! (Please let the Church Office know if you need assistance connecting your card to the Church Account.)
1) Register online at KrogerCommunityRewards.com (you must have a Kroger Plus card to sign up, so if you need one go to the service desk at any Kroger.)
2) Click on Sign In/Register (Be sure to have your Kroger Plus card handy) If you are a new online customer, you must click on "New Customer" box.
3) Sign up for Kroger Rewards account by entering zip code, clicking on favorite store, enter your email address and create a password.
4) Click on "my account" and use your email address and password to proceed to next step.
5) Click on Edit Kroger Community Rewards information and input your Kroger Plus card number.
6) Update or confirm your information.
7) Enter the NPO number (84513) of organization (St. John’s Episcopal Church in Worthington), select our organization from the list and click to confirm.
MEIJER: Will give a small percentage of your purchases to St. John’s if you use your Meijer’s Rewards card and pay in cash, PIN-based debit card, or use your Rewards-connected Meijer’s credit card. If you purchase groceries at Meijer’s and use any of those three methods of payment, you may join their Community Rewards program and have a percentage come to St. John’s (# 138441) for Outreach. Meijer.com/rewards has info on getting your Rewards card and connecting it to St. John’s Episcopal Church (# 138441).
ADDENDUM TO PHOTO DIRECTORY NOW AVAILABLE – The latest addendum for the parish pictorial directory is now available on the Information Table in the atrium. Pick one up! And don’t forget to take a copy of the list with contact information too.
WHAT IS COMMON MINISTRY? Common
Ministry is a way to address fundamental issues in contemporary
Christianity. How do we encourage, empower and equip members to live out
their Baptismal vows? How do we recover the priesthood of all believers?
How do we move from a model where professionals do all the ministering to a
model where ministry is shared among all believers all the time? Common
Ministry has its roots in the ministry of Jesus and his disciples. As the
early church became more formalized, more of the work of ministry was
centered in the ordained clergy. “The 1979 Book of Common Prayer re-claimed
Common Ministry in the Baptismal covenant and the Catechism calls all the
baptized to minister in the name of Jesus, to work for God's
reconciliation, to build up the body of Christ and to Work to establish
God's kingdom of justice.” “Common ministry is a collaborative ministry,
shared equally by all in the faith community. It holds the vision that all
are united in the body of Christ, each with special gifts and ministries
and all share in the church's work of reconciling the world to God.” “The
Diocese of Southern Ohio is being intentional about the need to train and
form as many of us as possible as ministers for Christ.” Each parish will
decide how to develop and use Common Ministry locally. We are not given a
template to fill in the blanks. We will use a process of discernment over
the next few months to determine how to apply Common Ministry at St.
John's. The Adult Formation sessions on April 18 and 25 are one of several
steps involving the St. John's community in the discernment process. Later
steps will include more discernment, determining personal and community
gifts, planning for our specific application of Common Ministry and
training folks to carry it out. Anna Sylvester, Leslie Smith and Bev Brewton
GREAT NEWS! St. John’s Early Education Center (ECC) has been awarded a three star rating from Step Up To Quality. We achieved this award because our programs have demonstrated that it meets the high quality standards set by the Step Up To Quality programs which include; low child/teacher ratio per classroom, teachers having degrees in higher education, hours yearly of specialized training. St. John’s ECC is the first preschool in Worthington to be awarded three stars. This is quite a distinction. Everyone worked extra hard and together ensured that the State of Ohio recognized our program as one of the premiere preschools in Worthington and the Columbus area. Kudos to all the teachers and staff.
ONGOING OUTREACH PROJECT - Kroger grocery stores in this area have a Community Rewards program for which St. John’s Church has signed up. Every time you shop at Kroger a percentage of your purchases will be credited to St. John’s account. For more information please look for flyers on the information table in the Atrium. Joan Bird
CHILDREN’S CHRISTIAN EDUCATION – Classes from 10:15-11a.m. in the Education Wing: Grades Pre-K—K meet in the Purple Room, grades 1-3 Green Room (downstairs), grades 4-5 Music & Movement Room (downstairs), 6th – 12th meet in the Barn. Maps are on the Information table in the Atrium and posted on some bulletin boards -- or simply ask someone!
ATTENTION KNITTERS Help knit watchcaps for our troops in Afghanistan. Directions and a sample cap are on the table in the atrium. Feel free to take a pattern, make a dark knit cap to keep our soldiers warm this winter, and return it to church. Operation Buckeye will send these warm caps to our troops as fast as we can turn them out. Thanks, and happy knitting! Questions? Call Kathy Hall at 888-1933.
